India's instant payments network business model legislation

India is advancing legislation to establish a sustainable business model for its UPI (Unified Payments Interface) instant payments network. The move could fundamentally change the current zero-merchant-discount-rate system that has been in place since 2020, where businesses have not paid fees to accept UPI payments. This reform aims to create a financially viable framework for the payments infrastructure.
