Apple develops photo authenticity verification for iPhone

Apple is developing an iOS feature that embeds provenance metadata into iPhone photographs at the moment of capture, allowing users to verify that images were taken with an iPhone camera. This "Apple Reference Image" system, found in iOS 27 beta 5, would enable users to prove the authenticity of their photos and defend against deepfake accusations. The technology represents Apple's effort to combat misinformation by providing cryptographic proof of a photo's origin.
