Former Syrian President Assad sentenced to death in absentia
A Syrian court has issued death sentences in absentia for former President Bashar al-Assad and his brother for crimes against humanity and war crimes committed during Syria's devastating 14-year civil conflict. The ruling comes years after the conflict that claimed approximately half a million lives. Since Assad is currently outside Syria, the sentences cannot be immediately enforced.
